'The Looking Glass' by Yajayra Soria

As I stand in front of the mirror...

I see the bags under my eyes

I see the frizz in my hair

I see the thinness of my body

I see the crookedness of my teeth

I see the lack of make-up on my face

I see the paleness of my skin

But most of all, I see my reflection STANDING TALL.

My reflection stands tall because...

The bag under my eyes come from the hours spent WORKING HARD

The fries in my hair is from enjoying my time out in THE SUN

The thinness of my body is the way I was molded and CAME TO BE

The crookedness of mg teeth is what makes my SMILE UNIQUE

The lack of make-up is because I like to see my FACE BARE

The paleness of my skin give me a natural GLOW

My reflection stands tall because I see MYSELF.

Yajayra Soria was born in Houston, Texas. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Houston in the fall of 2018. She taught flute privately during her undergrad and had minor gigs around town. Before she landed her current job, she was a long term-sub as an elementary music teacher. She is now the assistant band director at Springwoods Village Middle School in Spring, Texas.

Although pursuing a career in music, Yajayra has always been an avid lover of both art and writing. In her spare time, she likes to write poetry and paint with acrylics. She has been sought out to commission poetry for projects before but mostly enjoys writing as a form of self-expression. She believes that everyone has the ability to be an artist, whether it be through music, paintings, writing, or any fine art of your choosing, and that expressing yourself is the best way to learn about yourself and the world.
