Hearth & Coffin
editing services
prose x poetry

The Overview

Hearth & Coffin offers editing services for works of both prose and poetry. Writers can work 1-1 with H&C editors to see their projects through to their fully realized form.

Works of prose are edited by Editor-in-Chief Barrett White on craft, narrative, flow and much more. Sessions are available via email and Zoom with a flexible schedule.

Works of poetry are edited by Poetry Editor Rachael Matthews. Dial in your form, imagery, and structure with Rachael via email.

Editing sessions are never prescriptive, instead unlocking the writer's own creativity by focusing on their questions, vision, and goals with an informed third-party outlook and experience in craft.

Editing services and issue submissions operate independently of each other.

Submissions for Hearth & Coffin's editing services are open to writing of any kind at any time, regardless of the theme of the current issue or status of our submission schedule. Further, should your piece happen to fit the current theme, having your work edited by us does not guarantee publication. Per standard procedure, if you are interested in submitting your piece for publication you are required to submit it following the guidelines on our F.A.Q. page.

Editing Rates

We aim to make our services affordable to everyone. The fees for our editing services are based on word count, regardless of the discipline. Funds from our editing services support the upkeep of the journal and help us work toward our goal of being able to pay our writers a stipend for publication in our issues throughout the year. We humbly appreciate your support!

Our rates are as follows:

  • Up to 800 words: $25

  • 800 - 1,200 words: $35

  • 1,200 - 3,000 words: $45

  • 3,000 - 5,000 words: $65

Scholarships are also available.
